    The Influence of Adjacent Weed Populations on Thrips and IYSV in Onion

    Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci) and Iris Yellow Spot Virus (IYSV) constitute a pest complex of global concern for allium growers. Yield losses due to onion thrips alone can be heavy, and in tandem with IYSV, these losses can be complete. This study was one phase of a multi-phase research project intent on exploring the potential drivers of thrips and virus infestation in onion. Preliminary observations in participating growers’ fields in northern Utah pointed towards a potential link between weedy field borders and thrips/IYSV infestation in onion. Field work was carried out at the Kaysville experiment station examining the possible relationships between thrips and IYSV incidence in onion and the presence of adjacent weed populations. This research was conducted with the intent of guiding growers’ decisions regarding field border management, and to provide additional insights into onion thrips behavior. While implications for growers remain unclear, thrips preferences regarding host plant utilization were identified, as well as preliminary evidence of additional plant species capable of hosting IYSV

    Purpose: This paper aims to provide an experiential exercise for management and leadership educators to use in the course of their teaching duties. Design/methodology/approach: The approach of this classroom teaching method uses an experiential exercise to teach Adams’ equity theory and Vroom’s expectancy theory. Findings: This experiential exercise has proven useful in teaching two major theories of motivation and is often cited as one of the more memorable classes students experience. Originality/value: To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is an original experiential exercise for teaching the equity and expectancy theories of motivation

    Transcriptional changes when Myxococcus xanthus preys on Escherichia coli suggest myxobacterial predators are constitutively toxic but regulate their feeding

    Predation is a fundamental ecological process, but within most microbial ecosystems the molecular mechanisms of predation remain poorly understood. We investigated transcriptome changes associated with the predation of Escherichia coli by the myxobacterium Myxococcus xanthus using mRNA sequencing. Exposure to pre-killed prey significantly altered expression of 1319 predator genes. However, the transcriptional response to living prey was minimal, with only 12 genes being significantly up-regulated. The genes most induced by prey presence (kdpA and kdpB, members of the kdp regulon) were confirmed by reverse transcriptase quantitative PCR to be regulated by osmotic shock in M. xanthus, suggesting indirect sensing of prey. However, the prey showed extensive transcriptome changes when co-cultured with predator, with 40?% of its genes (1534) showing significant changes in expression. Bacteriolytic M. xanthus culture supernatant and secreted outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) also induced changes in expression of large numbers of prey genes (598 and 461, respectively). Five metabolic pathways were significantly enriched in prey genes up-regulated on exposure to OMVs, supernatant and/or predatory cells, including those for ribosome and lipopolysaccharide production, suggesting that the prey cell wall and protein production are primary targets of the predator?s attack. Our data suggest a model of the myxobacterial predatome (genes and proteins associated with predation) in which the predator constitutively produces secretions which disable its prey whilst simultaneously generating a signal that prey is present.     Information and communication technology applications can help increase the independence and quality of life of older people, or people with disabilities who live in their own homes. A risk management framework is proposed to assist in selecting applications that match the needs and wishes of particular individuals. Risk comprises two components: the likelihood of the occurrence of harm and the consequences of that harm. In the home, the social and psychological harms are as important as the physical ones. The importance of the harm (e.g., injury) is conditioned by its consequences (e.g., distress, costly medical treatment). We identify six generic types of harm (including dependency, loneliness, fear and debt) and four generic consequences (including distress and loss of confidence in ability to live independently). The resultant client-centred framework offers a systematic basis for selecting and evaluating technology for independent living

    Flight Performance of a Spin-Stabilized 20-Inch-Diameter Solid-Propellant Spherical Rocket Motor

    A successful flight test of a spin-stabilized 20-inch-diameter solid-propellant rocket motor having a propellant mass fraction of 0.92 has been made. The motor was fired at altitude after being boosted by a three-stage test vehicle. Analysis of the data indicates that a total impulse of 44,243 pound-second with a propellant specific impulse of approximately 185 was achieved over a total action time of about 12 seconds. These results are shown to be in excellent agreement with data from ground static firing tests of these motors. The spherical rocket motor with an 11-pound payload attained a velocity of 15,620 feet per second (m = 16.7) with an incremental velocity increase for the spherical motor stage of 12,120 feet per second

    The potential for modification in cloning and vitrification technology to enhance genetic progress in beef cattle in Northern Australia

    AbstractRecent advances in embryology and related research offer considerable possibilities to accelerate genetic improvement in cattle breeding. Such progress includes optimization and standardization of laboratory embryo production (in vitro fertilization – IVF), introduction of a highly efficient method for cryopreservation (vitrification), and dramatic improvement in the efficiency of somatic cell nuclear transfer (cloning) in terms of required effort, cost, and overall outcome. Handmade cloning (HMC), a simplified version of somatic cell nuclear transfer, offers the potential for relatively easy and low-cost production of clones. A potentially modified method of vitrification used at a centrally located laboratory facility could result in cloned offspring that are economically competitive with elite animals produced by more traditional means. Apart from routine legal and intellectual property issues, the main obstacle that hampers rapid uptake of these technologies by the beef cattle industry is a lack of confidence from scientific and commercial sources. Once stakeholder support is increased, the combined application of these methods makes a rapid advance toward desirable traits (rapid growth, high-quality beef, optimized reproductive performance) a realistic goal. The potential impact of these technologies on genetic advancement in beef cattle herds in which improvement of stock is sought, such as in northern Australia, is hard to overestimate

    The Value of the Keck Observatory to NASA and Its Scientific Community

    Over the last 13 years, NASA and its astrophysics and planetary science communities have greatly benefited from access to the Keck Observatory, the world’s largest optical/infrared telescopes. Studies using NASA Keck time have ranged from observations of the closest solar system bodies to discoveries of many of the known extrasolar planets. Observations at Keck have supported spaceflight missions to Mercury and the technology development of the James Webb Space Telescope. Access to Keck for the NASA community is an extremely cost effective method for NASA to meet its strategic goals and we encourage NASA to continue its long-term partnership with the Keck Observatory

    A Correlation Between Stellar Activity and Hot Jupiter Emission Spectra

    We present evidence for a correlation between the observed properties of hot Jupiter emission spectra and the activity levels of the host stars measured using Ca II H & K emission lines. We find that planets with dayside emission spectra that are well-described by standard 1D atmosphere models with water in absorption (HD 189733, TrES-1, TrES-3, WASP-4) orbit chromospherically active stars, while planets with emission spectra that are consistent with the presence of a strong high-altitude temperature inversion and water in emission orbit quieter stars. We estimate that active G and K stars have Lyman alpha fluxes that are typically a factor of 4-7 times higher than quiet stars with analogous spectral types, and propose that the increased UV flux received by planets orbiting active stars destroys the compounds responsible for the formation of the observed temperature inversions. In this paper we also derive a model-independent method for differentiating between these two atmosphere types using the secondary eclipse depths measured in the 3.6 and 4.5 micron bands on the Spitzer Space Telescope, and argue that the observed correlation is independent of the inverted/non-inverted paradigm for classifying hot Jupiter atmospheres.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ.     Pemilihan media pembelajaran yang kurang tepat dapat membuat siswa kurang antusias terhadap mata pelajaran matematika. Sehingga banyak siswa yang mendapat nilai dibawah KKM. Solusinya dibutuhkan media pembelajaran yang menarik serta dapat menumbuhkan antusias siswa dalam belajar.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan media pembelajaran berbantu wondershare dengan pendekatan RME sehingga menghasilkan media yang layak dan efektif digunakan selama pembelajaran. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian Research and Development dengan menggunakan model pengembangan ADDIE, terdiri dari 5 tahapan yaitu analisis, design, developmen, implementasi, evaluasi.Sebelum diimplementasikan, media pembelajaran terlebih dahulu dilakukan uji validasi oleh ahli media, ahli materi serta angket tanggapan siswa. Hasil validasi ahli tersebut berkriteria sangat baik sehingga media pembelajaran layak untuk digunakan.Pembelajaran dengan media pembelajaran berbantu wondershare dengan pendekatan RME efektif digunakan oleh peserta didik. Hal ini di buktikan dari rata rata kelas eksperimen dan kontrol yaitu 82,03 dan 60,54. Ketuntasan belajar individu kelas ekperimen terdapat 31 siswa tuntas dari 36 siswa, dan kelas kontrol terdapat 8 siswa tuntas dari 27 siswa. Dilihat dari ketuntasan belajar klasikal siswa untuk kelas kontrol dan eksperimen sebesar 22,86% dan 86,11%. Dengan analisis menggunakan uji t pihak kanan diperoleh nilaiyaitu 9,607>1,667 maka H0 ditolak, jadi pembelajaran dengan menggunakan media pembelajaran berbantuan wondershare dengan pendekatan RME lebih baik dibandingkan dengan pembelajaran konvensional pada materi SMP
